In 2024 we shipped the first AI gateway on the market, and last month we cut it loose from our API gateway entirely as a standalone router.
For three years, AI Gateway ran as a feature inside Kong Gateway with the same codebase, release train, and quarterly cadence. It made sense when AI traffic was small and new, but it doesn't make sense anymore.
Agentic world doesn't wait for quarters! MCP and A2A change mid-flight. New model providers show up every few weeks, but Kong Gateway's cadence is deliberately slow because it's running many of the largest API platforms in the world. It's hard to bolt a system that moves in weeks onto a codebase built to move in quarters, so we split them up.
AI Gateway 2.0 gets its own runtime, its own control plane, its own admin API β built around models, MCP servers, and agents as a priority. Kong Gateway keeps its rhythm and AI Gateway gets its own.
Another reason the market's first AI gateway is also the market's best AI gateway and most used among enterprises!
